Connecticut Psychological Association (CPA)

CPA is a member-based, non-profit, professional association whose mission is to advance and protect psychology as a science and profession in the state of Connecticut.  CPA is not a regulatory authority for CT psychologists. Up-to-date information about licensure and the practice of psychology in Connecticut is provided by the Department of Public Health and the Board of Examiners of Psychology.  Both the Department and the Board provide excellent resources for psychologists, students, and consumers. CPA works closely with these bodies to advocate for psychology and provide our membership with important information.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health

Psychology licensing in Connecticut is handled by The Department of Public Health (Psychologist Licensure (ct.gov)) to protect and improve the health and safety of the people of Connecticut. Their Regulatory Department includes programs related to the providers of health services, including psychologists. The Department maintains a section of its webpage devoted to Psychologist Licensure. This includes information about licensure requirements, relevant laws, and licensure fees.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
  • Successful completion of a doctoral degree from an approved program in psychology.  
  • Successful completion of at least 1 year of supervised work experience at the post-doctoral level.  
    • An applicant may substitute two (2) years of licensed work experience in lieu of this requirement 
  • Successful completion of the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) administered by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards – Prior to April 2001, the cut score for the EPPP is 70%.  On or after April 2001, the passing score is 500.
  • A completed application and fee of $565.00 
  • DPH may issue a license to an individual who has been licensed in another US state for at least 4 years. Documentation requirements can be found here: Applicants Licensed in Another US State for at Least 4 years (ct.gov)

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Complete a minimum of ten hours of qualifying continuing education during each registration period.
  • Not more than five continuing education units during each registration period shall be completed via asynchronous distance learning or home study. The other five units may be completed through live/synchronous online training or in person. 
  • No less than two training hours every six years must be on the topic of mental health conditions common to veterans.

RENEWING YOUR LICENSE
  • CT Psychology licenses are renewed yearly for a fee of $570.
  • A license can be renewed through regular mail or on-line (Connecticut E-license Website link (eLicense Online (ct.gov))
REINSTATING A LAPSED LICENSE
POSTDOCTORAL TRAINING PERMIT
  • This is a temporary, non-renewable, one-year permit for doctoral-level psychology providers who holds a doctoral degree in psychology or the equivalent from an education program, but who has not yet completed the supervised postdoctoral work experience or taken the licensure EPPP examination.
  • The holder must be under the supervision of a licensed psychologist.
  • The application fee is $100.

CAN I PRACTICE TELEHEALTH IN CT FROM ANOTHER STATE?
  • CT is a member of the PSYPACT Interstate Compact. Psychologists must be registered with PSYPACT to practice in PSYPACT approved states.  More information about PSYPACT can be found here: https://psypact.org.
  • In May 2024 the CT State Senate passed House Bill 519, which allows licensed out-of-state behavioral health providers to practice telehealth in Connecticut until June 30, 2025. Providers must register with the Department of Public Health (DPH). Information on the process has not yet been provided by DPH.

The Connecticut Board of Examiners

Connecticut’s Board of Examiners of Psychology (the Board), as established within the CT General Statutes in the chapter pertaining to psychologists, is the disciplinary body for psychologists within our state. The Board is charged with the following duties:  (1) hear and decide matters concerning suspension or revocation of licensure, (2) adjudicate complaints filed against licensed practitioners, and (3) impose sanctions where appropriate.  Members of the Board of Examiners are appointed by the Governor, and the Board meets at least quarterly.  The Board functions within the Department of Public Health.

REPORTING A COMPLAINT AGAINST A PSYCHOLOGIST

Persons wishing to file a complaint against a psychologist may contact the Connecticut Department of Public Health, and/or the Ethics Committee of the American Psychological Association:

  • To file a complaint against a psychologist with the Connecticut Department of Public Health, click here (Reporting a Complaint (ct.gov)) for information.
  • To file an ethics complaint with APA please send a short note by regular mail or fax (not by e-mail) to the APA Ethics Office. Please provide the name of the individual(s) against whom you wish to file your complaint and the state in which they practice. Address it to the APA Ethics Office 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002. The fax number is (202) 336-5997. Please note that APA has jurisdiction to investigate complaints regarding only APA members.
