CPA’s 2023 Legislative Advocacy Fellow

Gain public policy learning experience and use psychological science to influence government at the state and federal level.

Eligibility:

  • Enrolled as a doctoral student in psychology (from an APA-accredited doctoral program or internship).

  • Have a doctorate in psychology (from an APA accredited doctoral program). 

  • Be a member of CPA (or applicant for membership), and a U.S. citizen.

  • Able to attend weekly Legislative Committee meetings on Monday mornings at 8:30AM

Position Description:

The CPA Legislative Advocacy Fellow will be involved in the following ways:

  • Attend weekly CPA legislative committee meetings.  

  • Write up weekly legislative briefs to go out to members.  

  • Draft content for social media messages.

  • Serve on team sending out messages on Voter Voice when we need members to contact their legislators.  

  • Learn how to write testimony in response to proposed bills and gather testimony from members.

  • Have the opportunity to testify before the CT Legislature.

  • Organize annual Legislative Breakfast.

  • Participate in virtual Hill visits during the APA Advocacy Summit.  

  • Receive support and mentorship from CPA staff and leadership.

Ideal candidates 

  • Demonstrate excellence in scientific and/or professional psychology.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of policy issues.

  • Have a strong interest in applying psychological knowledge to the solution of societal challenges.

  • Are able to work quickly and communicate effectively on a wide variety of topics and be able to work cooperatively with individuals with diverse viewpoints.

Position Length:

March 1 2023- August 31 2023

Honorarium:

$1500
