Course Description and Overview:
This webinar introduces a one-on-one dialogue format that I have developed over a dozen years that I call “the Experiential Democracy Dialogue” (EDD). This approach is a hybrid of my development of the latter (see The Polarized Mind and The Depolarizing of America) along with my experience as a trained moderator for the national conflict-mediation organization called “Braver Angels.” Braver Angels is a grass-roots citizens movement that uses a highly structured group format to bring self-identified liberals and conservatives together for “living room” style dialogues. I will use power point to discuss the background of and phases of the Experiential Democracy Dialogue and offer it as a possible resource for audience members to use in their work with clients and the community. In the balance of my presentation, I will invite audience members to divide into pairs in virtual breakout rooms, select a topic of cultural or political controversy, decide who will assume a conservative and liberal stance toward the topic, and engage each of the six phases of the EDD. Following the engagement of each phase, each pair will be brought back to the large audience where I will then briefly describe the phase to follow and return them to their break out rooms. Following audience practice with all six phases, they will then be returned to the large group for discussion and Q. & A.
