Abstract:
The healthcare system plays a critical role in identifying and responding to patients who have experienced and/or used intimate partner violence (IPV). However, significant barriers exist to implementing clinical tools and practices for IPV use (i.e., perpetration), such as provider discomfort responding to, assessing, and managing risk associated with IPV use disclosures. This talk will provide an overview on IPV experience, use, and bidirectional IPV, including the current healthcare system response, and present findings from new research on efforts to improve the detection and treatment of IPV use and bidirectional IPV in healthcare settings.
Learning Objectives:
- Articulate what Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is: specify IPV use and provide a definition of bidirectional IPV.
- Â Articulate the process in the development of screening tools and in the implementation of treatment practices for IPV use and bidirectional IPV.
- Identify at least 3 best practice recommendations in the context of one’s own clinical practice.
