Abstract:

Not only are we challenged with the world that moves around us, but the world that moves within us, and who has a say in what we accept. The purpose of this presentation is to better understand the ways that weight stigma is connected to systems of oppression. During this engaging session, we will delve into the pervasive issue of fatphobia and its impact on our society. Our esteemed speaker, Dr. Joy Cox, is an expert in the field and will shed light on the subtle ways fatphobia manifests itself in our daily lives, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and systemic discrimination.

We kindly ask you to share this invitation with your friends, colleagues, and social networks who might be interested in attending this event. The more diverse voices we have in the conversation, the greater the impact we can make.

Learning Objectives:

1.) Identify at least 3 ways that weight stigma is connected to systems of oppression not limited to racism, ableism, sexism, and healthism.

2.) Explain how weight stigma and fatphobia are pervasive and impacts the lives of everyone, including those in smaller bodies.

3.) Identify at least 3 ways weight stigma shows up in people’s lives and practices.

4.) Identify ways to start the process of unpacking internalized weight bias.
