Abstract:

This presentation explores Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as a versatile, principle-based treatment approach that integrates structured protocols with adaptability to individual needs. Attendees will gain a foundational understanding of DBT, its dialectical applications in therapy and daily life, and its role in addressing diverse clinical challenges. Topics include suggested cultural adaptations of DBT to enhance accessibility and relevance, the efficacy of DBT for at-risk populations beyond Borderline Personality Disorder, and the ethical implications of limited DBT availability.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

1) Describe two elements of Linehan’s Bio-social theory.
2) Give one personal example of a daily life dialectic.
3) Explain at least one difference between a protocol based treatment and a principle based treatment.
