Abstract:

Dr. Beth Rom-Rymer, a prominent candidate for the 2025 presidency of the American Psychological Association (APA) and a key leader in the national prescriptive authority movement, forecasts that in the next twenty years, psychologists worldwide will gain the authority to prescribe psychotropic medications. This advancement aims to enhance access to integrated mental health care, addressing the shortage of psychiatrists and the extensive wait times for psychiatric consultations. Currently, psychologists in five U.S. states possess prescriptive authority, supported by APA’s recognition of “clinical psychopharmacology” as a specialty. This initiative is particularly crucial in rural areas, where psychologists often outnumber psychiatrists, offering timely and comprehensive care to underserved populations. Dr. Rom-Rymer emphasizes the importance of psychologists being trained in psychopharmacology to foster effective patient-therapist relationships and collaborative care. Moreover, she highlights the potential role of prescribing psychologists in mitigating over-prescription issues, advocating for a balanced approach to medication and psychotherapy.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Identify and sequence three critical steps required for the legislative passage of a Prescriptive Authority bill.

2. List and describe three specific educational requirements and training milestones necessary for a psychologist to obtain prescriptive authority, including coursework, supervised practicums, and certification exams.

3. Summarize three early research findings on Prescriptive Authority and implications for clinical practice.
