Abstract:

Research suggests differing rates of subjective cognitive decline as well as elevated risk of premature cognitive decline in sex and gender minorities. Neuropsychological evaluation typically involves administration of standardized, validated cognitive and psychological tests, with normative comparisons of an individual to a group of similar peers in order to investigate these symptoms. However, there is a lack of normative data with which to evaluate gender diverse individuals, which can complicate this process. Understanding the unique biopsychosocial context of these individuals is critical in across clinical and research settings. This presentation will provide relevant epidemiological information, information about provision of care to transgender/gender non-conforming individuals, as well as a review of existing literature and recommendations for neuropsychological evaluation of transgender persons, along with relevant educational resources.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss at least three psychosocial considerations unique to provision of care to transgender individuals.

  2. Describe at least three interpretive considerations when utilizing common neuropsychological tests with transgender individuals.

  3. Identify two peer-reviewed resources with pertinent considerations for neuropsychological evaluations with transgender individuals.
