Asian American Mental Health amidst Anti-Asian Hate
Anti-Asian Hate is not new. And yet, its new found public visibility brings new and old meaning to understanding the mental health needs of Asian Americans. This presentation discusses the legacy and present day manifestations of Anti-Asian Hate and it’s impact on Asian Americans. Suggestions for working with Asian Americans from within the community and as an ally.
Presenter: Nellie Tran, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at San Diego State University with the Community-Based Block Multicultural Community Counseling Program and the Immediate Past President of the Asian American Psychological Association. She is a community psychologist who works with schools, communities, and agencies to create systems-level changes that reduce the impact of subtle forms of discrimination such as microaggressions on people of color and women within the workplace, educational, and counseling context.
Learning Objectives
1. Attendees will learn about the legacy and present-day manifestations of Anti-Asian Hate.
2. Attendees will learn about the impact of racial discrimination & Anti-Asian hate on mental health outcomes for Asian Americans.
3. Attendees will learn strategies for working with Asian American clients and communities in the face of Anti-Asian hate.
